Brace yourself. It’s Christmas party season.
This means (or so I’ve been told) a seemingly endless list of invites to lavish events, long lunches and a perpetual need to be at the elusive ‘top of your game’. It’s why I’m always on the look out for comfortable ways to get there; comfortable ways to prepare for the plethora of festivities that are to be happily showered upon us.
For most though, London life consumes our week’s leading up to Christmas, and the idea of fitting in time to shop between your annual Christmas pub crawl and the other 374 important things in your arsenal leaves us weak at the knees, and so we tentatively place time for ourselves tentatively last on that laundry list.
So given you’re so busy, I’ve taken the liberty of listing out a series of steps that – I hope – will serve to help you prepare for the Christmas party season. And to make things even easier, I’ve partnered with One New Change to help bring this simple step by step process to life.
Situated next to London’s St Paul’s cathedral, One New Change is the destination for those who want to be both firmly atop their Christmas preparations, and firmly removed from the crowds that they usually accompany them: the retail equivalent of a private tropical island.
My requirements for being Christmas Season ready:
- A fresh to death haircut.
- A positive attitude.
- A range of outfits that will see you through to January. And,
- The time to reflect on how great 2016 was, on a rooftop overlooking St Paul’s Cathedral.
There are two things I never joke about: brunch, and having your hair done right. So when it comes to the latter, I know the gents down at Ted’s Grooming Room One New Change have me sorted. From the moment you walk in you know you’re in safe hands, and that’s how I like it.
If you’ve never had a traditional Turkish haircut (or complimentary Turkish coffee), I highly recommend it. They really listen to what you want, make suggestions based on what they know will work, and take their time to get it right.
THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE
It’s clear when walking through One New Change that it’s been designed to make the whole shopping experience not only aesthetically pleasing (seriously, it’s gorgeous for a photo), but as stress-free as possible. So, when you’re there, take a moment to think about how special London is this time of year.
Given there are a range of great retailers at One New Change, it’s the perfect place to pick up those special presents for that special someone (your mother, of course), as well as something for yourself. Me – I love shopping at Hackett. It’s good quality and the service is expert – their team are on hand to provide honest styling advice.
And because it’s the season to be jolly, I’ve pulled out a couple of essential items every man needs for their Christmas wardrobe:
- The woollen scarf – go for more versatile grey or navy.
- The leather gloves – nothing screams ‘I’m a man’ more than a nice pair of leather gloves.
- The crisp white shirt – you can’t get enough of these and at Hackett you’ll find one that fits right.
- The statement sock – to help make an outfit pop (subtly, of course).
Now that’s sorted, it’s time to reward your hard work with a refreshing cocktail and delicious meal from Madison’s on the 6th floor. With one of the best views across the skyline of London, it’s easy to sit back, relax and enjoy the afternoon.
- Ask for a table outside for uninterrupted views of St Pauls Cathedral.
- The scallops and grilled halloumi are insane.
- Order the Hot Bitch Martini and thank me later.
THE FINAL WORD
If you’re looking for a great way to take the stress out of this Christmas season, give One New Change a go. It’ll allow you to smugly answer with the affirmative ‘yes I am’ to your friends when they ask are you ready for Christmas?, and ‘oh, thank you kindly’ to well don’t you look dapper.
